Bioidentical Hormones

Why would I want to live to 80 or 90 when I feel so lousy now?

Just because the average life span has increased, doesn’t mean the average quality of life has. Have you noticed some people are able to be active and vigorous into their 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond, while others – perhaps you – experience debilitating fatigue, joint pain, trouble sleeping, mood changes, sexual decline, and/or loss of general well being? Come talk to us about bioidentical hormones and learn how you can have improved quality of life and improved health. Let us help you help yourself.

What is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) uses evidence-based science to achieve optimal hormonal balance, relieving some age-related symptoms and the restoration of well-being. Studies also indicate bioidentical hormones may improve cellular communication and function, and may help prevent certain chronic diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s diseases and other forms of dementia, osteoporosis and possibly certain cancers. The therapy aids in the loss of abdominal fat and can be an adjunct to weight loss as well as improved muscle bulk and strength.

Who should try bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are suitable for both men and women. BHRT could be right for you if you’re experiencing:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain (especially around the belly)
  • Inability to manage stress
  • Loss of libido, difficulty achieving orgasm, or erectile dysfunction
  • Depression, mood swings, or anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Diminished overall sense of well being
  • Memory loss/cognitive decline
  • Decreased endurance and muscle mass
  • Hot flashes
  • Cold intolerance
  • Vaginal atrophy, vaginal dryness, incontinence, frequent bladder infections
  • Osteoporosis
  • Skin, nail and hair changes, including loss or thinning of hair, wrinkles, brittle nails

How does bioidentical hormone replacement therapy work?

Many hormones decline with age:

  • DHEA
  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone
  • Testosterone
  • Pregnenolone
  • Growth Hormone
  • Thyroid
  • Melatonin
  • Oxytocin

Others increase:

  • Insulin
  • Cortisol

As hormone imbalance and resistance occurs, we become susceptible to weight gain and decreased metabolism, pre-diabetes and diabetes, adrenal fatigue and functional hypothyroidism – all of which accelerate the symptoms of aging.

Each person’s needs for bioidentical hormones are individual, based both on your personal goals and your body’s existing hormonal balance. Your bioidentical hormone therapy plan will be based on supplementing your hormones that are deficient in order to achieve optimal balance, symptom relief and well-being. Your program will be individualized to you specifically and will be monitored on an ongoing basis.

How is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy different from conventional hormone replacement therapy?

Let’s first talk about what is a bioidentical hormone. Bioidentical hormones are lab-made; some are sourced from natural products such as soybeans and yams, while others are synthesized in the lab and they behave and interact in your body the way your own hormones would. Conventional hormone replacement therapy relies on completely synthetic, non-bioidentical hormones that don’t always mimic your body’s own hormonal behaviors.

Dosing is another difference: bioidentical hormones can be customized both by specific dosing and route of administration. Conventional hormones are sold in preset  dosages for a “one-size-fits-all” administration.

The synthetic pharmaceutical grade hormones, Premarin®, Provera® and PremPro® have been associated with increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and stroke, the data of which can be found in the large multisite study, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI Trial).

How do you administer bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones can be administered in several ways:

  • Oral (swallowed pills)
  • Orally in daily quick-dissolving tablets
  • Sublingual (under your tongue)
  • Pellets under the skin
  • Patches adhered to your skin
  • Creams, gels, and suppositories
  • Injections

The delivery method varies based on the type of hormone therapy required and individual preferences. We tailor to fit you.
